Why doesn't cooking kill the bacteria on the tainted spinach coming out of California?

It probably would, but the 100 plus cases of e-coli sickness, including at least one death, are all from eating the spinach leaves in salad... raw, so to speak... washing doesn't help. The California growers, especially the organic growers are going to lose nearly a billion dollars on this recall...
