Odd one - 7d Passing appeal to head of state (2'3) ?? I?G

12a Calming influence finally found in second case(8) ?E???I?E

Sedative? Influence finally could be E and the second person plural is DATIVE, but this "person" rather than "case". Doesn't seem quite right somehow.

10a Cheers someone doomed (5) ??A??

26d A cooler young lady will swallow nothing (4) ?A?L

Could be JAIL which is the Cooler (think the Great Escape) but don't get the young lady swallowing nothing...

26d is GAOL

26d - Gaol (Gal swallowed 0)

s for second, e for last letter of influence, dative for case

Dative is a "case" in eg Latin

Question Author

NMA - must be. O is an appeal although usually OH and K'ING is obvs head of state. Thanks.

Other clues anyone?

Sedative - '(influenc)e' (in) 's(econd) dative'

One final one that I thought I must be able to get but it's eluding me - 6a Broadcast with cracking aria not finished (4)

?O?N

Aria could be SONG and not finished would make it SON but I can't get further than that.

sown- broadcasting seeds

W for with in SON(g)

Question Author

"with" supplying the W. Never heard of "broadcast" to mean sowing seeds, but you live and learn!

Sorry, it was  lazy explanation.  Broadcast means sow not sowing- and past tense is also broadcast I think

Question Author

Me being imprecise too. Had not heard of "broadcast" (present tense) to mean "sow". But thanks NMA
