I had to buy the Big Red Book today!

14a is OOM (A S Afr word for uncle/Low=moo backwards,

16d IKE (IKEA without A)

Ha! that explains why I couldn't get (I)KEA to work. :))

I was wrestling with that too! Crafty clue.

Thanks, all, I’m almost there now. Impossible to guess the remaining Unclueds without my Chambers! Much help needed to confirm the following, and offer hints if possible for the answers.

15a ST?A?AIG ;  18a ?L?IKET  ;   19a  KEE?I?  ;  22a  MUR?E?  ;  24a  ??U?D     43a ?Y?E?AR?I???

3d SHOO???  ;       21d ??E?G?R?I?

I'm in the same position as you, Matakari - I think they are all Scottish words. I think some are, but have no idea whether they are correct or not as even googling them together does not give a connection.

13 Clamjamphrie

15 Stravaig

18 Glaiket

19 Keelie

43 Gyre-carlines or Gyre-carlings

They're all correct, JJ - 21d is an alternative spelling of GLENGARR(y) with IE instead of the 'y' (this will give you the correct ending for 23a). This spelling only features in the end section in Chambers, and isn't in the entry for 'glengarry' (I think you'll struggle to find the 'ie' ending anywhere else).

I tried to give a hint on the other thread regarding the theme - it's simply that they're all Scots words (and a 'scot' is a tax).

Thanks ProfMaisie

The "Special Section" only appears in the latest version of Chambers. Nonetheless, I was able to complete the puzzle as all answers are in the main section of the earlier editions except for the alternative spelling referred to in this post. There are 2 alternative answers at 3D. One is a verb & noun, the other an adjective. Take your pick. Wouldn't be a "Doc" without a dodgy clue!

Help please with 22a.  (unclued) ..... murle?

I can't find it in Chambers (specific page).

Murled is a Scottish word! Whether it is the Scottish word that they want is another issue!

The preamble states "most" are on a specific page. I don't have Chambers.

Thank you.

I opted for "murled" too. The preamble states that one unclued word is in the past tense so it seems likely.

Hi

I only  try the Spectator cryptic occasionally and never submit my entry, but I am intrigued by the use of "special section"  Is it the red-edged section in the middle ? I cannot find a Scottish one at all

I my 13th edition it is the red-edged section at the back labelled Scotticisms.
