The wordplay in the clue contains a superfluous letter. In this case the letter is an "F"

Whence Frank has heroine initially run away - extraordinary strangeness ensues (6) ?A?S?S

I think the answer is "Kansas" and is to do with Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz" - Dorothy initially runs away from Kansas. Therefore Kansas fits the whole clue, but I have also tried to anagram (F)rank has (-h for heroine) but I have an R instead of an S. If I take "R" for run away, I am left with an H instead of an S.

Is it parsed some other way please?

Many thanks!

if the F is superfluous, you have "rank has". Heroine initially is "h" and run is "r". Take these away, you have "ank as". Extraordinary is an anagram indicator. Follow it with "s" for strangeness - particle physics terminology.

Many thanks Nescio!

Now just the EV to do!

On the solution submission form, there is nowhere to enter the two unclued (10,9) at present

Nine letters have to be inserted to complete the unclued so surely the two words have to be submitted,

Is this an error on the part of the Guardian ?
