No idea what the endgame is.

If the entries are of same lengths , then there are no 7 answers with same length (5, 6, 7 or 8).

We had something very similar recently - think of the puzzle title as 2 syllables (they're short ones).

The 14 clue answers are varying lengths - the short things you're looking for are either side of the empty cells you're creating, hankir (ignoring the gap in the middle each time).

Take the L out of 10d and look either side of the gap (this is a very well known one).
