Hi there, I’ve got a full grid except for the unclueds which still have me flummoxed. A hint suggests that the “same word” is a 4-letter down answer, and I have a few unlueds that I’m not sure of:
1a BONES, 4a VENGEANCE, 41a FRAMEWORK, 42a CRANK
Am I on the right track? Thanks for guidance!

Look in your answer for 13d ro find the 4-letter head word. You are nearly there
Once you have found the head word, look in Chambers or some good dictionary or online
The first three are right but crank is wrong.
novalis. yes I forgot to mention 42a :(

Oh my goodness, a recent hint suggested looking at a medieval word for torture and I've got it long ago and have been playing with it without realising I was on the right track. Thanks, jazzgirl! Now, I should like to finish the rest on my own...I'll ask for help if I get stuck!
Can someone please help me with one of the unclued? 17d. ?i?t
Teacher, I have lift which follows the headword and is a type of elevator with a cage. But this is just my guess
Thank you FreyaBee.
Mist. It's under 3 in my 1998 edition of Chambers.
teacher1 (and FreyaBee): It's not 'Lift' I'm afraid. If you have Chambers the answer lies in the 6th headword. I can give the answer if you want it.
Like Matakari, I also had crank for 42 which I see is incorrect.
I wonder if the word follows 15d . Hints appreciated
novalis has beaten me to it. We must have different Chambers editions?
Thanks all ...... I think I need to get a Chambers ! lol
I have a Chambers and still can't complete it! :-)
Greyfox, in my later edition it is under 6. FreyBee, it is under 7 in both editions I've just looked at and is a contraction of a longer word.
Thank you greyfox and novalis. I have Chambers 13th but must have missed that. I am making a right pig's ear of this !
Just to make myself clear, I am referring to 2 different grid entries. Tilly, if you have the head word you need to read through each of the 8 definitions to find the required entry.
I think the headword is R??K. Is that correct?
Yes.
Indeed it is Tilly.

And thanks for the reply novalis.
