As is often the case with my LOI, I can't see how the clue works:

Upset on sea, wretched mostly - so it is! (3,2,3) ?A?/?E/M?R

It's obviously MAL DE MER from the definition "Upset on sea", but I can't get a handle on the construction. Any ideas?

RE MED LAM(e) backwards
The definition is just 'upset'

Then RE for 'on', MED for 'sea' and LAM (almost LAME) for 'wretched' mostly, all reversed
I think 'upset' is the reversal indicator - the whole thing is the definition (it's an &lit clue).

That makes sense. I'd assumed it was an &lit, I just couldn't see any of the constituent bits.
