The clues are in alphabetic order.
This clue appears somewhere in the middle. No answer lengths are given.
The longest grid entry is 9 letters.

Cry of joy about succeeding being at full length (two wds)

Thanks.

IN EXTENSO
'Cry of joy' = IO (around) 'succeeding' = NEXT (around) 'being' = ENS

Thanks ProfessorMaisie.

That answer would clash with 17d. I have a 5 letter word for bird ending in L.

If you can also help with 4d. That would get me going.

Writer retorts, upset about American invaders?(11)
...that 2nd (around) should be +
You'll soon see how the entries avoid clashing, hankir.
4d is the key.

The clue answer is 'penetrators' - but don't put that in.
...for 17d you have the right bird but the answer is a river.
Question Author
I did not understand your comment, Professor.
Which clue you are referring to?
Question Author
Thanks Professor.
We crossed.

I was referring to your answer :
...that 2nd (around) should be +
...if it's the '(around) should be +' bit you mean, that's for IN EXTENSO (you answered too quickly for me).
...we've just done it again, hankir (sorry - I'm very slow!).

I was entering answer "In Extenso"in 9th row.
The bird loses L and becomes river. That's my entry at 17d.
The N clashes with second letter of 17d.
As you said, it will become clear later on.
...as a way forward - 4dn is the key (as I said) so you're ok entering across answers upto that point - then, beware!
...upto and including that point is ok. You'll soon see another word taking shape in 4dn.

Thanks Professor.

Still trying to solve across clues.
What are the defs in clues starting ('Tis...) and (Is returning....?)
'Tis...' is sort of &lit - the whole clue is the def (first 2 words are the anagram) I haven't found it in Chambers yet but it looks like 2 words possibly hyphenated.
...the anag is minus the 'e' - last letter from 'harangue'
'houses' is the def for the other one - you need the character from Massenet's opera around 'is' (reversed).
Question Author
Thanks Professor.

I did not realize that the first clue answer can be ten letters long.
The preacher turns up 4-6.
I can enter first 4 and then have to solve other clues to decide what letters go in from Col. 4 to 9.

I will have to look up Messenet operas. Not familiar with them.
But is reversed in houses could be resides. Most grid lengths are 4 or 5. 8.9..

My answer to 4th clue Observes... is 8 letters long.
Question Author
I just looked up Messnet heroine.
Thanks for that tip, Professor.
