Last two! 15a. Present soldier with newspaper. (4). I have I*T*
44a. Assistant in Russia identified. Should be 'aide' but 30d. is 'Railroad car' giving *a*d, but I can't see 'iaid' being a word.

15a.What is the clue giving the 'i'
I don't think there is a crosser for teh first letter ,danny. The crosser is the A in ?A?D. I think MM suggested the IAID as that is part of RussIAIDentified
What is the clue giving the 'i'?
The I is determined by 1d, which is Fish I snared at sea (7)
SardIne
(Anagram)
Thanks Lynne.I think Genius is a bit of a misnomer as far as the setter is concerned.
Sorry danny- i thought you were referring to the disputed AIDE one.
GIFT certainly looks right for 15a
That did seem to be the obvious answer but 30d is railroad car hence the a unless it's an error wth the print thankyou both

Many thanks to you all!! And a Happy New Year.
Apology accepted, can't quite see how it could have been a grid error but now I can sleep at night.
