Clue is Henry's 3/6 (but not 4 Old Bob) 1. 3/6 =Henry's third wife of six. 2.3/6 = 3 shillings & 6 pence which os less than 4 shillings. Bob is a slang word for a shilling (old money) Hope this helps.

jayne Seymour was henrys 3rd wife 3/6(3rd 0f 6) not four shillings ?
3s /6d is less than 4s
Mary: could you repeat the clue, making sure commas etc. are in the same place? (Not 4 old Bob being different from Not 4, Old Bob).

I think Mally's probably right, but still can't get the significance!

the 4 Old Bob seems superfluous (and doesn't need capitalising)
Old Bob is capitalised in the clue.I don't see it as superfluous as this is a cryptic clue.
Not for old Bob?

Not 4 Old Bob?

Not for old Robert?

Not four shillings?

Cryptic bordering on barmy.
As usual, you've got it right on the nail, DK: WHEN am I going to fox you??? Sigh....

CJ
I agree that old bob should not have been capitalised in the clue. Also, the 'old' is redundant, four bob makes more sense in this context.
dannyk, I don't believe clues, cryptic or not, should have superfluous words.
CJ, play fair now - Mally was first in - admittedly Danny did some tidying up.

Keep setting, you'll stump them one day.
Henry's 3/6 but not 4/- would have been more concise and perhaps better understood.
You are quite right, mamyalynne, mally was first in (by 3 mins!).
But I'd still like to stump DK! (fat chance, eh DK?)
I take your point jackdaw, and I think your version is actually better!

Thank you all for your comments - they are a great help in terms of real, helpful feedback

Kind regards to all,
and have a lovely Christmas.
