That should have been... Ers, plant. More recent references to it are available - in Merriam Websters under 'vetch' and lots of stuff online (using 'ers vetch').

It's showing as 'ers' on the usual crossword sites but I can't get Google to define that for me!
Ers, plan, is in Websters dictionary - the 1913 one!

Many thanks to you all. I did have the letters ers but could not find a definition and it wasn't listed in my recent Websters. Problem now solved.
Ers is actually in Chambers - I should have looked there first, rather than investigating online!
Yes, Neveracrossword, it's the last three letters.
I've just noticed the BA - quite undeserved! Helewel and Buenchico provided Ers first, I just tracked down definitions.
