Could anyone cold solve this for me please. Trap one in California jail (10)
The clue ends up as a 4 letter word when a 5 letter herring is removed. I am left with a.is. Any help gratefully received.

I note you meant 9 letters.
So when the 5 letter word for a herring is removed you are lefy with
A?IS - is that right? (your last dot being a full stop)
Question Author
Yes. That's what I have.
Name of the California jail?
Your duplicate thread had the title Unusual Supspects. Des that mean there is a theme to tthe answers?
Does the 5 letter word precede the 4 letter word to give the 9 letter answer- or are they interspersed.
Maybe CA is part of it
Just a guess- ca p a rison minus capon leaves aris.
Looks promising, danny, Maybe there is no definition for these- unless the caparison is iused with a pony and trap. i need to look up ARIS.
I had though of CALAMARIS but dropped the idea as i thought ARIS didn't seem like a word- maybe AXIS
aris is slang for buttocks but I can't see a link
Thanks scorpiojo
"One word should be extracted from each of ten solutions to leave another word (the lengths of the original answers are given). One of each pair is to be entered in the grid, while the omitted words when taken together suggest the title of a detective novel. In the completed grid six names can be found running across or down from the shaded squares; taking both the storyline of the novel and the title of the puzzle into account, solvers must highlight 26 cells appropriately"
Give me a straightforward crytic anytime
We need Antmark to come back with his thoughts on this.

Thank you Danny. If capon is a herring then that is perfect.
Under 'trap' Chambers has 'to caparison, to deck with trappings'.
I only know of capon as a form of rooster
Question Author
Apparently, a blister is colloquially known as a Yarmouth capon, so sorted. Thanks to all, especially Danny.

Bloater Damned autocorrect.
Glad to help.
Well done danny. Tough crossword. I assume the instruction about detective novels was not relevant to this clue ( a red herring?)
FF, you're right about the theme in this excellent crossword. It's the August puzzle from the Crossword Centre - so only a couple of days old! It's very good of experienced setters to do these puzzles.
I have a completed grid but now don't know what to highlight. Am I looking for names?
