Many thanks dannyk13, scorpiojo and Neveracrossword
36d has E in the middle.
My 38a is an anagram of part of alter ego and provides G. The word means moulding.
So I have a conflict.
Help!
The 'moulding' is an anagram indicator - the result leaves no clash and helps thematically!
There is one mention of conflict in preamble.
Probably this is it.
No, Hankir - there's no clash at 38, it's elsewhere.
hello hankir ... all is well ..your moulding is correct but it is one of the 2 across clues(along with 37a which is an anagram of the defn given in its clue) that wander hence you need the G....entry which should be an anagram of your moulding
The whole line of 37a 38a gives you your pair ??
Roslyn, thanks for that - I hadn't twigged the 'wandering' part of those answers as I got the theme very quickly, so raced on to the next stage!
Thanks NAC.
Back to the clue.
Hankir, the stuff from Roslyn was much more informative and useful!
Thanks ros.
I see the two wanderers now.

But still a few to solve.
Well, I am totally confused, although I have solved some of the down clues, what is in or out has m scratching my head. Some general guidance as to the preamble would be gratefully received
Devadolly, the 'in' and 'out' stuff isn't essential. Have you got the two wandering clues? Roslyn had an earlier, helpful post on this thread. As far as the preamble is concerned, the stuff about the 'closed path' might help you.
Hi Devadolly.
Let me give you a little more.
37a and 38a are important to solving.
The clue answers have to be modified before entering as roslyn said.
That's when you will see the first 6 characters in that row will give you the FIRST Instalment and the next six will give you HIS partner.
So you know now that first instalment is male.

Once you get the two names, rest will be easy.
Thank you all for the hints, sadly the two important across clues are two I don't have. As yet still nothing is making sense but will re-read and try and be sensible.
Devadolly, here's some help with the two important clues. This is just for you to answer them, the thematic stuff will follow.
37. Last bare layer's very pale. 'Very pale' is the definition. The 'layer' is the frequent three-letter word, 'last bare' = you need two letters from 'last'. This 5-letter word then has to wander, alter slightly - it joins up to the fourth letter in 30 D. 38 A is even more straightforward - a 6-letter moulding, obtained from anagramming most of the next two words in the clue. The answer itself is then anagrammed to give a thematic 'partner'.
