Orthopterist is more one that studies crickets,but a letter short anyway.

I am beginning to think there is a problem with the clue.
.... or the setter who is unsure of his/her moths, crickets, butterflies .....

If that is so,then 'lepidopterist' is the only word which fits
I looked online and discovered a creature called Dissosteira Carolina that looks like a cricket but flies like a moth. Could this be what Tim was thinking of? It's native to N. America.
