HARD

Had (misled) about R.

Sure = Hard
Hard? Had (mislead, had, around R, republican)
How do you parse the newspaper ?

Thanks, all!

But what is the reference to newspaper?
That part of the clue - newspaper - seems redundant?
I always assumed that no part of a cryptic clue was redundant unless specified as such.
Question Author
The answer is definitely "HARD" as acknowledged by the Daily Telegraph's crossword web-site. But the parsing of this clue is even harder.
Oh I agree donny, I was attempting to explain why it was being queried.

It is the Toughie though and I do struggle with those
As well as a "redundant" newspaper I am not convinced with sure = hard. I accept this is the answer but until shown otherwise I think this is a terrible clue.
Just submitted it and hard is correct, but the parsing eludes me., the only thing that comes to mind is that a newspaper is hard copy.
Could hard refer to the fact that it is the toughie? ( newspaper's crossword)
-- answer removed --
Yes I would assume it's a newspaper term but that suggests only newpspaers / writers use the word hard to mean sure which seems flimsy to me too. Happy to be proved wrong if I learn somthing new in corosswords though :)
It was said in one answer that sure= hard, I remain unconvinced of this synonym.
My suggestion that sure = hard was in the sense of being solid (i.e. certain).
Chambers gives hard (of news) as definite .
Ok

So newspaper's definite/certain/sure = hard = ha r d?
Even "Big Dave" appears to have struggled with 'parsing' this clue . . . .

I'm in good company then.xx
I don't like it, it's too tenuous, but I'll throw it in the mix -

*IF* "newspaper's" is a synonym for "reported", then -

Hard - road leading down to a (fore)"shore" ("sure", reported) ?
