I have derived KLONDIKE from K(ing) + LIKE (= nearly) around ON D(iamonds)
(b)Lent - no 'b(ook)', past tense of obscure meaning of 'blend' (to delude)
Question Author
I thought it probably was, but blend meaning delude is not in my dictionary. Thanks

I look forward to your thoughts on the rest!!
If note =N in IT, BURS= hangers-on -alternative spelling of burr.
Nice one, slaney - much better than the pitiful effort I was about to try having been fixated on 'NB'!

BUR instead of BURR, OK. That leaves
Taste bad after heating once? Go without grub (6, 2 words) GROWT_
I think it is "N" for note, with BURS (alt spelling of "burrs") for hangers-on, inside IT
Thanks LIK - still stuck on first one though...
Grow to - 'go' (without; around) 'rowt' (alt. sp. of 'rout'; to grub up)

From Chambers -

grow to ... (of milk) to stick to the pan and develop a bad taste in heating (so prob. Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice, II:2: obs)

Ahh ha - rechecking definitions you think you know in Chambers always worth while!
