My daughter who lives in Calgary Alberta takes the Globe & Mail. She sent me these clues together with their answers and asked me if I understood them. I didn't! Perhaps you can help.
1. Clue: Her heart's across the Atlantic (5) Answer Susan
2. Clue: Her husband is likely to be much overrated (9) Answer Termagant

2. Rate is another word for scold, so he would be over(ly) rated
I agree. A termagant is a nagging wife and as iminoz says, rate is another word for nag.

As for no. 1 the 'heart' of the name Susan are the central letters, USA. I would have thought that it would have made more sense in a British paper than a Cadanian one.

As I said, if it were in a British paper then USA (the 'heart' of Susan) would be across the Atlantic.

I agree but it's not! I wonder if the G & M gets its crosswords from the UK

Could well be. A lot of these things are syndicated and occasionally what works in one place may not work in another. In a British paper it would be fine as a clue.
