Ferret starts the 2014 EV series off with a fairly gentle solve. Had to be careful to avoid one particular sequence that could have provided an alternative highlighting, so an impressive construction. Thanks Ferret.

A gentle start to the year, but well-constructed, and some nice clues. Sometimes it's good to have a puzzle that is fairly easy; I'd sooner have a well-set and elegant easyish puzzle than something that is harder but not as well put together. I think this is Ferret's debut in the EV, and I hope to see more of his puzzles soon.
This was simple as ABC, but more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

Yes it is Ferret's first EV, but quite a pedigree with crossword in the Inquisitor and magpie regularly over the last two years. More of the same please!
Agree with the comments but I have two little "niggles" - it was one until I saw Jim 360's original post. He makes reference to one particular sequence to be avoided. I can see only one sequence anyway and that is a short one to say the least. Also, 34 down has me slightly bemused. I assume the answer is the obvious one with X as the unchecked letter- confirmed by Chambers - but the last word of the clue then seems "out of place" for lack of a better expression.
I shall now go back to last week's. Although I have the first two words of the phras I cannot for the life of me work out the remaining two words.

Thanks for that x_word_fan. Will get back to it now. I assume the two is "by".
Absolutely Novalis
Hi DocHH.

Thanks for that confirmation.
