Thanks all of you, 32ac must therefore be offences not defences.
17a) Gertrude STEIN did say "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose" but don't currently see why rose = clue

Well, I could only work out that in the context of a crossword, she would not have used the 'rose' in the quote.

Picking up on 17ac.Must have substituted Clue for Rose from the quote you gave BB.
