I have found X which seems to indicate that the unjumbled 40A should start with H, but I still can't get it.
My version of the grid entry starts with B and ends with T.

Hi Boreas

Yes, had to do lot of trawling through the sporting history books to find the names to match.
You have the right letters, this was a more recent (1980s) success.
Must admit I can't parse all the clues but 18D is an alternative two-letter name for the earth (or gaia) on M (Mike) on another word for 'stripped'.
Many thanks Gregsdad,
I will look again at this years.
That is a very strange word at 18D. I too have found it hard to follow a lot of the clues, even though I have the answers.
I can see the answer for 40 across now. I had considered this several times but rejected it because I have an S at the end of 23 down.
I have just found that this word can also end in an I

Snap ! I did exactly the same...I didn't manage to parse this one though.
CA' - Scottish (s)urge - + R in THAI
Thanks shikasta.

I had found a definition of HA as meaning 'urge, but no suggestion that it was Scottish.
