27 A. Milton's preface resolving spite at shelter (7) ??i???e
6 D. Answer (dry) covering poor player's turn in NY (5) ?t??t
(I can see 'stint'/turn, but have no reasoning.)

NB. The preamble to this crossword says there are 'single extra letters yielded by the wordplay' in most clues.
Thanks for any help.

27 Epistle - anagram of spite + Le(e)
Question Author
Thanks - I knew 'epistle' meant 'letter', but I didn't know it could mean 'preface' too.
^ Only used that way by Milton I think.
6d Atilt? A(nswer) + Il(l) in TT(teetotal/dry). I don't see the "player's turn in NY" though
Question Author
Thanks for 'atilt' - the 'a' would be ideal for an unclued answer connecting with this. Like you, I don't see 'player's turn in NY'.
6d At-bat, I think- baseball term with possibly poor=ba(d)
Question Author
Slaney, thanks - I aas just coming on to post that I'd got 'at-bat'. (The reasoning was similar to 'atilt' - a+tt+ba(d)/poor.
Question Author
I have finished this, apart from one letter!
24 D. Amiable? Not initially - he wavers (3) ?et

There's probably an extra letter yielded by the wordplay in this clue.
Thanks for any help.
Wet? (as in politician) (S)we[e]t
Question Author
That sounds good - thanks.
are the squares to be highlighted something to do with a shape rather than words?
Question Author
Re highlighting - I thought it was to be words, and I've got a 23-letter answer, but can't track it down in the grid. I'll keep thinking and looking!
I have found one word that seems relevant. It starts with L
Question Author
That's the one I found - I still can't see the other two.
Nor me. I always find word searching the hardest part of these puzzles.
Question Author
This may be a crazy thought, I've just looked at the title again. The 19 obviously refers to the answers, collectively, to the unclued entries. I was wondering what the 116 related to - it could be ?, ?, L......(the word we've got in the grid). The letters that would fit my ? and ? are immediately next to the L word. If this is nonsense (very likely) what does the 116 refer to?
I have found a second word - it carries on from the L word
I can't see the third word.
Question Author
I've tried, can't see anything myself - the 'L' word was/is the third in the three/phrase I had. Is this the same for you?
I was thinking it was: ? word L word W word.
The unknown word having 10 letters?
Question Author
You've given me something to think about! I'll have another hunt.
My thinking was ???????? ??????? L-word.
