St Andrews Golf Club is called the Royal and Ancient, or R and A. 'A' is cut from that. Definition is 'fringe'.

Collins does show the meaning of Rand as border or a strip or margin.

I live close to another St. Andrews Golf Club in Midwest, but obviously it is not called the Royal and Ancient here.
