Don't know how they tie that in with the clue....

Rigol means 'circle, diadem'. Solution should be either synonym of 'pachyderm' or 'water channel', so not at all convinced - did anyone see the online solution before it was removed?
rigol = "A gutter or water channel" 1st def. in Chambers.

pachyderm = log = "An insensitive person"

so log + i + r (recipe, latin for take) all reversed.

I'm not argueing dr b, but where does the pachyderm = log = insensitive person come from?
From Chambers:

log: "An inert or insensitive person (figurative)"
pachyderm: "An insensitive person"

of course def. 1 for pachyderm = "strictly, any animal of the old classification Pachydermata, but usu an elephant, rhinoceros, or hippopotamus".

I've been called many things in my life, but never a log or a pachyderm.
I'd got that there was likely a connection with RILL (a water channel) but not having access to Chambers was struggling thereafter.
Good night.

Thanks Dr B - about as obscure a word as you could want. But now convinced! This was a nasty Paul McKenna puzzle - took me ages to get into it
