A fine puzzle which elicited a gruckle (groan + chuckle) at the final PDM. The method of entry for the 24 was fairly easily discovered and a lucky/inspired Google search led right to 11d and the character.

The EV gremlins seem to be back, however, given the '24' in the preamble. And, unless I am missing something, the wordplay for 7a does not give the last letter of the definition?

Yes, a good puzzle and I agree regarding the preamble and 7 across. I don't understand the word play for 1 across at all. I'm not quite there yet as I don't have the thematic word. The penny drops slowly these days. Good to have a challenge.
I get 1 across now - I was looking for more and missed the obvious.
Nice to see you back drb. I haven't started it yet, will wait for the calm of the upper deck, it's been a devil of a day, one thing after another. Just thought I'd check to see what sort of difficulty I'm going to be facing.................looks bad as there ate only two of you posting.
Don't worry, devadolly, I haven't been eaten and it is a straightforward puzzle.

The final pdm was what amused me most.
Got the word in the end with more of a groan than a chuckle - a groan for being so slow. Very clever. Thanks Nutmeg.
I found the excellent clues more difficult than the delightful theme. This has taken me much longer than the average EV.
And 7a must indeed be missing a word - "...stabbed by a mega/male/married pain..." perhaps.
As others have said this was a clever and enjoyable puzzle.
For some reason, and after solving not many clues, I realised the character appearing in the grid and worked from there.
I like dr b's 'gruckle' and had a similar reaction.

Thanks Nutmeg
I think you'll find that the 7 across definition is an adjective, so that the clue works fine as printed.
Double do'h - thanks magwitch.
A bit confused about this word - is the title 2 words of which the second is the one to be written under the grid?
Hello there once again. I have been hospitalised with a severe heart attack during the last fortnight and Nutmeg's effort has not improved matters. Nearly completed the grid but 7 across is causing me loads of problems which affects 7, 9 and 10 down . Please have mercy and put me out of my misery.

Thank you all in advance,
Hi Shoni

I'm sorry to read of your severe health problems & trust you are on the way to recovery.
If I tell you that 7a is (PA)ROXYSM I hope that will help things along!

Good luck.
Kayakamina, 7 across is NOT paroxysm - see my post of yesterday!
Apologies magwitch. For some reason I missed your post.

Shoni - sorry for the bum steer.
Hope you are on the mend Shoni and that there are no recurrances. I too am at a loss about 7a etc. I have the character and also the 11d but am not seeing the thematic word at all. Some hints would be appreciated.
Thank you all for your kind words. I am glad to say that I am getting better slowly. However I am now completely stuck with Nutmeg's puzzle. I have completed all the grid but cannot fathom what the 8 letters following of the puzzle's missing title. a thematic word to be written below the grid. The rubric in this part is very abstruse. The only word that make some sense are Mum or Dad, but an 8 letter word is mentioned. Can anybody really point me in the right direrction and put me out of my miserty please, before I suffer more problems.
Hi Shomi70, get well soon. The missing word is a BBC current affairs programme, which reads on from the initial letters. It starts with one of the frequent omissions, and ends with the other
I meant Shoni70. Sorry, it's late . . .
Hello all

Because of the vagueness of the rubric, I cannot decide what the missing title would be? I wonder if anyone could help.

Many thanks
Panorama
