Any ideas how long you are supposed to initially charge a mobile phone up for when you first get it? I've heard a variety of answers ranging from 8 hours to 16 hours.

It would depend on the specific phone (or rather the type of battery etc.)

The manufacturer's recommendation would be in the accompanying manual.

A typical Lithium Ion battery requires an initial charging time of a much longer duration than it's subsequent recharges. Also, these batteries have a longer life if you recharge them often and not allow them to fully discharge.

I would say 16 hours. You cannot harm the battery by 'overcharging' as the 'phone will decide when it has received suffcient charge and stop charging.
leave it on charge (and avoid using it while charging for the first time), until the phone tells you its done.
