Quite a pleasurable romp after some difficult ones recently. More time to watch the Olympics.

Away for almost all of weekend, but managed to do this last night whilst zapping between Olympic finale and Rory's magnificence - very nicely worked idea, amusing title, and all fitting unambiguously together in the end. Many thanks, Lato
Teuchter2, I think you'll find your second i is already removed by the wordplay. As for me. I still have a long way to go and I can't see any connection between the unclued answers so far.
I'll never be a member of the Friday night club as I don't start until Saturday but I did get a full grid reasonably quickly. Then the penny stubbornly refused to drop......busy on Sunday..... and then picked it up again today and the PDM came immediately! Funny how often that happens. Very enjoyable puzzle.
I'm finding this one quite tough - perhaps taking a break for a few weeks has addled my brain, but I've only got about half of the clues, and none of the unclued lights are looking hopeful. Anyone want to give me a nudge on 1 ac. as that might give some much needed inspiration! judy_petran(at)hotmail.com

A full grid, all unclued entries and the thematic hint - and absolutely no clue whatsoever. Hopefully things will become clear if I try to forget about it for a while. Very much enjoyed some of these clues.
...and, as always, not thinking about it for a few minutes did the job. Lovely crossword.
Did anyone else struggle with 29 ac?
Old trick works. Ask a question and the answer immediately hits you.
Looked back at this when working out a hint for Judy - really is very good - clever PDM and I am a big fan of the relatively 'terse' style of clues.
I didn't find this as straight forward as others seemed to. Came together easier than last weeks though. Missing the Olympics big time.
BTW now that 4199 is published ..
I assumed, and so it transpired, that one word play 2D included 'Done' = 'U'
I still cannot fathom why that is, or the logic that supports that.. ...
Can any of you clever folk please explain it to this simple soul ?
tenflags - the BRB gives for 'done' (under the headword 'do'):
"(of behaviour, etc) socially acceptable"
e.g. as in 'the done thing', I suppose.
As far as 29 ac goes, then yes I'm still having difficulty - but I've still got most of the SE quadrant to fill so I'm clearly not on the same wavelength as Lato!
I found 29ac tricky (but kicked myself when I got it). I thought the clueing was very tight generally. I usually find three-letter answers tough at the best of times, made worse when there's the spectre of a possible hidden letter lurking (not to imply that there is, or isn't, one in 29ac).
I have similar problems. I'm never good with clues where something is 'taken away' and its even worse when I don't know whether it has or not! I end up doing a lot of reverse engineering and trawling through BRB to understand the wordplay
Not in my earlier version of the BRB Texasetes ... simply 'behaviour' but I guess one can impute the rest. Thank you.
Perhaps one day I might win a copy of the up to date BRB.
Editions of the BRB back to 1998 all contain the quoted text, tenflags.
If your copy predates that, maybe it's time to consider sending Amazon* £21.60?

Have to say I didn't find this particularly easier than last week's! I suppose the end of 4201 was painstaking, but it was reasonably clear what was going on. With this one, spent a lot of time with a half full grid and no idea what was happening until the PDM finally came along. Nice puzzle. I wonder how long Lato spent trying to get that last missing letter in there?!
Just one clue left to get - 27D - not a word in the BRB iPhone app. I have an answer in mind, but if it is right, I don't understand the wordplay.

Really enjoyed this one, although 13A, 29A, 32D and 19A all took an age to solve (the last not helped by me having originally got the first letter of 20D wrong!). Can't fault the clues though, I just wasn't on the right wavelength!

An excellent endgame; I was on the right lines from the hint but it took a little while to get exactly the right interpretation; once the first suggestion fell into place, the rest followed pretty quickly and allowed some reverse engineering of a couple of the more recalcitrant clues.

Now off to look at 4201 - although from the comments on here it sounds like a real mind-bender!
