Got there in the end after a muddled start and it all fell into place quickly at the finish. I enjoyed this puzzle and for me it had just the right amount of difficulty. I love EV Sundays!

Plenty of time left to take a look at this week’s Azed Crossword:

I might just do that - thanks. Are computer printed entries eligible for the prize if I submit?
Hi!

Not as far on as Twit-Who. Still need 42 down and that is really frustrating me. As for the final word search that is, as always, proving beyond me. just going back to it after catching up with various other things.
Just checking in as I haven't opened the paper yet, freezer shifting and glaring at the ever ripening redcurrants.......you want to come and pick some christina?? Hello Twit-who may be asking you for help ere while.
Novalis, many thanks for the hints for lasdt weeks, haven't had another look yet but will.......can I believe my translations re dog's name?? Am I supposed to enter that in the grid?? Hoping all will become clear when I look again!
I found this to be a bit of a grind, even though the 2 drifters revealed themselves fairly early on. Even though I had a strong suspicion as to what the 20-letter quote needed to be, tracking down which clues had extra letters was a pain, and I am still not sure I have them all correctly identfied. But, you don't need to know that to finish the grid, so...

96 degrees in old St. Lou right now; forecasting 103 by Thursday with no rain in sight! Can you send us some of yours, please.

Hi Novalis,

Just wondering if you managed to sort everything out or if you are still frustrated with 42d? If you would like a small hint I'll give it but hopefully you are there now.
I've identified the drifters to highlight but have no idea what the extra letters spell out. The letters I have don't seem to make sensible words!

Also can't solve 1ac, 8d and 42d. Any hints would be welcomed.
Haggis - if you need help "off tread" I am at [email protected]
or off thread!
I'm with Haggis on the clues left to answer.. Can't identify the quote yet. The keyword i've got hasn't given any sensible answer yet in ODQ. Keep plugging. Did anyone have a go at the 'Turing' puzzle on the google title over the weekend? Kept me amused for a while. Took me back to my programming days 30 years ago.
Many thanks for your offer of hel Twit-Who.
Still can't get the elusive 42 down and have absolutely no idea about the two drifters. ( Keep thinking of "Moon River" - "Two drifters off to see the world" - but that doesn't help. ) I am away from early tomorrow until late Friday but intend taking this with me. The train journey from Manchester to Exeter may inspire me.
Novalis,
I'm only partway through solving it but I have one of the drifters on the SW-NE diagonal.
A very good and enjoyable crossword and for once containing no errors. Unfortunately though, I have two outstanding clues still to do - 42 down and 46 across. I have the main letters in them but the two barred letters are a mystery to me. Any help and board ( sorry broad) hints would be very welcomed so that I can get on with my other work. Thank you in advance.
A good and enjoyable crossword with no errors thank goodness. I have two clues only to solve , the barred letter missing in both, and for the life of me I am well and truly stuck. Any help and board (sorry broad) hints would be most welcomed so that I can carry on with other work
Thank you in. advance
I've solved a large part of this crossword including the two drifters, but am all at sea over three or four of the same culprits others have mentioned. More importantly, having worked out the quote I thought I understood how to modify the 12 clues, but can't see how to work out which of two letters would be selected to fit into the second light in 11 down.
C: every other alteration leaves real words in the grid, so I opted for that in 11d as well.
Thanks for that drb, though I'm still doubtful. One alternative is quite obviously not a word, but the other doesn't appear in that form in my version of the BRB. It seems the best choice, though, in the circumstances.
It appeared in Chambers Word Wizard, which was good enough for me!
Thanks for that Gen2. I'll have another look on the train later. It leaves 14 letters still to be highlighted. As for 42 down it is still completely eluding ma.

Hint for 42d - concentrate on the definition of the first word of the clue to start with.
