I'm new here. I wondered if, when answering a crossword query, it was required to explain the reasoning for the answer. I can't see anything about it in the rules but I wouldn't wish to appear rude (or presumptuous)

It is not required and I don't usually do it. I will if asked.
No fixed etiquette - people might explain if it's particularly devious clueing, but not every time

Hello & Welcome to the madhouse :+)
Not always required, but it helps the OP to understand your reasoning for your answer.

Hope this helps :-0
Some people do it. I generally don't because most people get it as soon as they have the answer. I will, though, if asked...

BTW, I'm curious about your name - are you a Gaelic kitten...?
No, just if you want to or the poster asks. Sometimes if the answer looks a bit obscure the reasoning can help. Welcome to AB peashaq.
Welcome to AB peashaq, don't worry about etiquette, just offer your answer, and like us, if you are unsure in any way, just add a question mark at the end. We are all very friendly really, even if you are wrong, we are grateful for any input.

Thanks all - excuse the abbreviations.

HK - to the point, ta
s-d - ta for welcome and warning!
Nibble - it does, ta
tt1 - ta for welcome
TW - ta (? handy to know)
MR - you speak the gaelic!!
Get ready for some Gaelic! ;-)
> MR - you speak the gaelic!!

LOL! You really are a newbie :-). Or, should I say, 'S e "newbie" fìor a th'annaibh"

Zhukov - I see what you mean!

MarkRae - I didn't know a single thing about computers, AB, Gaelic, cats, and women for that matter until about a month ago. I suddenly found myself agreeing to look after a cat (I'm weak in the head). The cat's owner (bossy sort)
insisted that I sign up with AB, use the name 'peashaq' and be intelligent with my questions and answers (she's not right in the head either) - the cat could die anytime!!
I wouldn't be offended if you explained the reasoning, after all, I wouldn't be posting the question if I could have reasoned it out in the first place.

soliloquy - thankyou
Fair enough. As you may have gathered, your AB name sounds very similar to the Scots Gaelic word for kitten - pìseag, pronounced PEE-shuck.

How the howl could my name sound like anything in print ?
> How the howl could my name sound like anything in print?

Knowing how written words sound when they are spoken is fairly rudimentary...
