Typically fiendish one, this, but I think I'm almost there.

Can't get 8across though:

Japanese waitress quits, according to playwright, after sumo wrestling (7)

I have MMOUSE?, but the letters spelling MOUSE have be rearranged to fit the theme, so the actual word has them in a different order and there's also a T from the wordplay that is omitted in the solution.

This may be wrong, however, as 4 down is

Climbing, fit jumps for Ed (4)

for which I have LEP? (with a missing L from the wordplay)

Any offers?

Great! Many thanks. MOUSMEE is in Chambers so I should have got it. That means LEP? is correct for 4dn. Do you know what that is?
Question Author
..still don't get the "jumps for Ed"...
"Ed" usually refers to Edmund Spenser, so some archaic or invented usage of his. I did answer this just above.
Question Author
Thanks. I doubt if Spenser was ever called Ed, even by his pals!
Think you need to rearrange MOUSMEE to Mmousee, or similar? I've posted now so can't quite remember!
I believe they called him "Eddie baby"
Question Author
Yes, MOUSMEE becomes MMOUSEE in the grid because of the themed rearrangement of a thing that wasn't stirring.
I went with LEPS.
