Campo
Nice one, leylandtiger,I thought that was Grassland, just learned something, cheers.
Chambers gives South American grassland and field from the Italian root. Anyone got a reference for square? Or is it Kate's weekly blunder?
Noun

campo m (plural campi)

field (agricultural, sports)
battlefield, airfield
range
signal (mobile network)
shot (film)
(art) background (of a painting)
(in Venice) square (smaller than a piazza)
Siena's town square: Campo, Siena, Italy

Guide to Italy ... you will find yourself on one of the city's numerous squares, called campi in Italian, for they started out as grassy fields (campo means 'field'). ...
Thanks, Dr Filth. It looks as if "Italian town" in the clue should read "Venice". I googled Siena and found plenty or references to the main square as Piazza del Campo, which can hardly mean Square Square, but might mean Field Square/Meadow Square. But it's still a piazza, not a campo. Qualified apology to Kate.
i think she just goes on google sometimes and picks a word that fits the spare squares :)
Thanks all. I was also missing this one.
