Many thanks mintyman
Cheers as usual Mintyman!
Merci beaucoup mm
Thanks as always mintyman.

A surprisingly straightforward puzzle from the winner of the Times Crossword competition for the last four years.
Many thanks mm.
K - you must have been the runner-up then!!?
Hi saladdodger.

If I'm not mistaken 'ordinary' came up in one of the qualifying crosswords.
Thank you for the link mm. An early finish for me too!
Am finished, but not 100% sure of my answer for 4 Down.
Book with such jokes would make mistakes (5) on?r?
I've put 'oners' - 'boners'(mistakes, with the b/book), but I've not found a definition for 'oner'= 'joke'.
I thought short for one-liner - a joke?
Thanks, roslyn - that was all I could think of too.
Thanks for link
Enjoyable today- I had never heard of 7d though? Am I alone?

Dubious indeed although it looks like fun
Many thanks for the link. An early finish for me as well. Agree that 7 down is dubious but with the runners replaced it would fit into the thematic category.
I seem to be stuck on 39a. (unclued) (4) ?o?o
Any help please ? Thanks.
Re 39a. Starts with S. Should soon get it from Chambers.
7D is the "questionable" example. Odd we weren't asked to shade it.
Dumpynose would have.
