Is 12 across blessed with the correct clue? I've seen the same clue (31 across in this case) leading to a different answer on occasions, but I can only work out one single word answer which doesn't relate to the clue given in the online version.
Otherwise, plenty of time left for doing other things this weekend, and probably my quickest finish for a long time. An enjoyable romp, so thanks to Samuel.

Don't praise the double clue too much or these brilliant setters will end up giving us a whole crossword of identical clues with different answers.
Having almost finished last night I now have a full grid (apart from the barred-off words) and no ideas as to the endgame. Pride goeth...
I don't have access to my own records at the moment, aldanna, but I'm pretty sure that it's been done! I think that there was one set of clues with two grids to be completed (and if it didn't win the Gold Cup it was placed). The words "Doubleshooter" and "Peeper" come to mind, but I'm hazy on the details.
Some time ago there was a Speccie (by Doc, I think) in which the instruction ws "The unclued clues aren't.", and indeed the uncluied lights were formed by finding second solutions to some of the clues normally listed. ....
Rogue-Elfe, I think I know who you are but do any of us have your email? Do I?
All filled except 42 ac, and explaining word identified. I know what I'd like the nine more cells to be, but damned if I can see them.
All done - and many thanks to Samuel for an entertaining puzzle : yes, it might have been relatively easy to spot the devices used, but there was some very fine cluework involved. A slight quibble might be the odd surface reading of the pre-ramble.... but that's just being picky.
Trux, for me the pre ramble was a work of art, suitably deceptive then absolutely clear once the solving was underway, and, above all, succinct rather than those rambling pre-lectures we've been having lately for the cartes blanches and other horrors - though I know of your predilection for half page pre whatevers :)
As rogue-elfe has observed earlier, Samuel's self-imposed suffering pervaded all clues and preamble, hence some oddness
Agree with TB69, the single word does not really explain the suffering. For the two word warning, found it easier to work backwards from the likely phrase and then try to locate this in the grid.
As so often happens, no sooner had I posted my comment than everything fell into place.
Ru'hrobin : okay, okay ... my remark was perhaps overly harsh in such a marvellously well designed puzzle ... apologies, Samuel ... I really did have fun solving each and every clue and frankly admired so much ... sincerely, Rux
I have managed to complete the grid and find the explaining word but as yet the warning phrase remains elusive, although I think I know what it ought to be! Nice puzzle, a bit more manageable than the last few weeks.
Found it! Put it down for a couple of hours then saw it straight away...not sure that Samuel would approve of that method!
Nice one, SallyR - I am sure he wouldn't :)

I was unaware before reading some offerings here of how Samuel's preamble was in keeping with his overarching idea, nor how near impossible I would find mimicking his device. Now I comprehend why his preamble is awkwardly phrased in places. Bravo!
Yep grid filled.. . off to Wimbledon Tomorrow so I think I will look for the phrase when it rains up there.. looks like I might have plenty of time on my hands to do that.
Very good Zabadak. I also find myself admiring Samuel's word wizardry and, like you, wonder how he managed pulling off such an amazing puzzle. Far from easy!
I had also failed in grasping Samuel's skill preamble-wise and am now full of admiring feelings.
Skill in every line of puzzle ... admirable, indeed !! (carefully avoiding any usage of said device)
After 2 days of desperation looking for inspiration, including bullock's hides and waterfalls, I have finally realised I am not looking for a 9 letter explaining word. The germane warning should be "Read Preamble". I am half tempted to let the address on my entry suffer similarly, but it might go to the wrong part of the country!
