Thanks Trimeresurus

That's one down.

Ann
what does 'Tas' mean? Might start with Pan for cook's vessel
Question Author
Hi Prudie,
I took it to mean Tasmania, as this is an Australian paper that the crossword is in.

Thanks
Ann
Could it be Pandanus ?
Question Author
Hi the winner,
The 'U' at the end is the first letter of another word.

We hear the bell tolls for her (4)
pattern:
- - L -
(starting with U from pandanus if that is correct)

regards
Ann
Pandanus fits the wordplay but I think Pandani is the Tasmanian heath plant. Pandanus is a different plant altogether but I think it must be the right answer.
Hi Ann, I have to go out, will check back later.

Hi,
I've put 'PANDANIS' in and the 'I' near the end makes the word needed for this is:
We hear the bell tolls for her (4)
pattern:
- - L -

Thank you so much for all your help.
regards
Ann
Nell sounds like knell
Pandani can also be spelt pandanny which fits the wordplay for New York.
If that makes the other clue start with N it could be something like Nelly (sounds like knell?)
*Nell

Hi Calibax & Sandy Roe,

I put pandanny in ages ago and it came up as nothing, but when I put it in as pandani-pandanny it came up trumps!!

Also, Thank you NELL. I never thought about Knell being her & bell chime.

Thank you once again
Ann
