just visited a chip shop in Willaston,nr Nantwich, Cheshire on the menu it had smacks 50p when i enquired as to what they were i was told potato scollops and he thought it was a term used in parts of Lancashire.Has anyone herd of "smacks",does anyone know the where it comes from

Not a term used in NW Lancs anyway!

We call 'em potato scallops too.

I live in Cheshire and until I moved here I had never heard of the word. The term is used extensively around Crewe. As for its origins I'm afraid I can't help.

I had to get used to faggots being called savoury ducks and bother being called mither!
