What is the meanig of "rear guard action" in the following sentence?

"On the way back to their boats Masons men were surprised by a party of about three hundred Pequot warriors. The white men and their Indian allies had to fight a rear guard action to get out alive."

If you are trying to escape an enemy force, a rear guard action is when the fighters at the rear of a party try to keep the attackers at bay, whilst the party retreats to safety.
