Hello keitra! Haven't seen you around for a while!

The phrase "To sit around" implies lazing around, wasting time, being bored, having nothing better to do... that kind of thing. So to me, if someone is sitting around in the bath, I would assume that the person was bored and had nothing else to do other than have a lazy soak in the bath. Hope this helps.
When we add 'around' to another word, it generally suggests wasting time, as Indie suggests above. So, we have play around, muck around, fool around, mess around, wait around etc.
Sitting around in the bath was of course a favourite occupation of Douglas Adams, which is why it's a reoccurring theme in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy -- and why one of the main characters wears a dressing gown throughout. This may perhaps have made the phrase popular? The fourth book in the trilogy is now being brilliantly serialised back where it all started, on Radio 4: 6:30 pm on Tuesdays, and 11 something on I think Thursday nights. (For non UK people, www.bbc.co.uk, Radio 4, Listen Again). Share and Enjoy!
