true story - dog adopted by forces?

recently while shopping in Asda i picked up a book that was the true story of a dog that had been adopted by one of the forces (not sure which)..i think they had to keep it hidden....however now that i have gone back to buy it, i cannot find it!!!...can anyone tell me the author or title please.

i know the army serving in N Ireland (south armagh) adopted a terrier dog there--think they called the dog 'rats' and i think a book was written about that---maybe what you are thinking about?
