Sarumite, thank you. I know this fits but I have even checked the glossary of my complete Shakespeare and it does not list this definition for legitimate. Do you have another source please?

Hi classicalgal .. I actually found it in Bradfords Crossword Solver's Dictionary as the only entry listed against legitimate, so I consider it's probably too much of a co-incidence not to be the correct answer?
