For the same reason as we refer to dentists 'drawing' teeth...the word means 'to pull towards yourself' and has done in English for over 1,000 years. It made its first appearance as such in print in 'The Lindisfarne Gospels'.
as in "draw near with faith and take this Holy Sacrament to your comfort"
Draw is an example of contranym in this context-you can draw the curtains open, and then draw them closed again.
