Evening everyone! I am posting this on behalf of my sister, it should probably go in 'family' but never mind! My sister's partner is Muslim (fairly strict) but she isn't, neither of them have any intention of converting & they completely respect each others beliefs etc. They have a 6mth old daugter who he wants to raise as Muslim, my sister accepts this and is fine with most of the 'rules etc' - the only problem is that she doesn't want my neice to have to wear a Hajib (head-covering). She is fine about her wearing it to the Mosque or if she goes to a muslim school, but doesn't want her to wear one all the time!! Does anyone know if Muslim girls HAVE to wear a Hajib, I know they don't wear it at home - but my sis doesn't want her to have to wear it at all (other than Mosque/school!!) Thanks A xXx

I love the way you say "they both completely respect each others beliefs", yet the daughter will be raised a muslim in a predominantly secular, followed by Christian country.

But to answer your question, as said no.

This marriage/partnership will sadly end in tears.

I have no problem usually with mixed marriages (ie religious) I have many friends Catholic + Protestants and other mixes, but none of these dictate what daughters should or should not wear as a religious symbol. This childs mother has every right to say when her daughter can wear a Hajib there should be a compromise here, and if there isn't then well as I said.....tears etc.

My friend's Muslim, she doesn't wear one. So i don't think it's a must.

I'm a muslim, but I'm by no means a scholar or the highest authority on these things. Here's what I think...

There is no explicit mention in the Qur'an about women having to wear hijabs as far as I know. However in the ahadith (the documented speech and actions of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh) it is said that women should dress modestly. At the time of the prophet, modesty was interpreted such that the women began to wear hijabs.

Hijabs, veils etc are intended to be articles of modesty to divert undue attention away from a muslim girl or woman. However in this day and age, especially in the current climate of Islamophobia there is a strong argument against wearing such articles as the effect they have is the opposite to that intended.

It's really a question of how your sister's partner interprets "modesty". However he interprets it, in Islam the role of the parents is to promote Islamic values and to endeavour to raise their child as a good muslim. Please note how I didn't use the word "force" - Islam recognises that there is no virtue in compulsion.
I know we are going away from the original question, but why is the Muslim faith so dominated by what the men think or want.I have a very close relative who lives in Indonesia and he tells me that during Ramadam all the wealthy Muslims go off to the west so they do not have to adhere to this tradition.
I suppose that I will branded as being too simplistic but: 'when in Rome do...................'.
"Islamaphobia"???????

Errrr is there a word that describes just a strong dislike for an evil and outdated religion without resorting to a term suggesting one is scared of such a repulsive institution?

A word that will single out this faith, with a FULL acceptance and respect of all other world faiths.

What some of you focus on is a very, very small section of the islamic faith. They commit atrocious acts and claim it is in the name of "Allah", "Islam" of the "Qu'ran". This then gives, what I can only assume, already racist British folk a "reason" to be racist. Judging all Muslims on a minority isn't right. It's like assuming all white CHristians are part of the Ku Klux Klan.
Racism????? Without sounding argumentative, I was unaware Islam or Muslims were/are a "race".

How odd that you seem to think they are goody.
afraid muslims arent a race.they are intent on converting as many folk as possible.in a similar way the catholic church has in africa.funnily enough africa is where catholisism is on the rise in comparison to the general decline world wide.
dont wanna open a can of worms but devout followers of islam do believe that nonbelievers , or infidels if you prefer, will suffer on the day of judgement and only believers will remain.muslims that is .
one good arguement used by islamic extremists to justify what they do in the name of allah.i feel thats where it differs from extreme christians goody.who i dont think quote the bible to such an extent .in fact i cant remember the last time an extreme christian organisation blew up buildings in a major uk or us city in the name of god or jesus.but feel free to refresh my memory.
as someone mentioned before, Muslims cannot all be judged on the extremists, my boyfriend's dad is Muslim and his mum was brought up to be Protestant, he does not ask that she wears veils outside of the house, nor when they go to Iran (where his family live) does she cover her face with a veil. And as for the judgement day thing, doesn't every religion believe that unless you believe their religion (or repent for not believing) then something bad will happen?
There is Christian terrorist movement in India that have frequently bombed bombed hindi communities.

Not to mention the nutters that work for the Christian GOd that commited these in America "According to the National Abortion Federation, between 1977 and 2006, anti-abortion terrorism was responsible for 7 murders, 17 attempted murders, 41 bombings, 173 arson attacks, 100 butyric acid attacks, 157 incidents of assault and battery, 4 kidnappings, and 385 death threats"

Are you saying Extreme Christians who kill in the name of god are better than extreme Muslims that do the same!

I really believe you are playing right into the hands of extremists. You can alienate a whole religion because of a few and then the extremists grow in numbers.
It's not that Christian extremists are better than Muslim extremists, it's just that often when people are finding something wrong with the Muslim religion one common argument is "When was the last time you heard about Christians doing this that and the other"
