Answers are sports and pastimes; On your own (8) Mother can get confused (7) What's the point in dressing? (8) Twisting progress (8) Play the game whilst the learner leaves (5) The painter gets his colours mixed (4) ....... be warned, anything may constitute a sport or pastime with this quiz. It has a reputation of not being particularly well compiled. Any offers???

Play the game etc. will be whist. (Whilst minus "l")
On your own - solitaire possibly.
Painter: Yoga (anagram of Goya)

Whist and Yoga...thanks! Agreed re-Solitaire, but spelt wrong. Another question amongst these was "soon dim the spots (7)" which of course is the Greek island of Dominos!!! Like I said, it's not a quiz with a great reputation for accuracy, but it's for charidee!
Could 'on your own' refer to 'patience, given that that is how one plays it? It does have eight letters.
Twisting progress - pontoon

Thanks again all. But patience was the answer to another one, and the "twisting progress" is meant to be 8 letters. Also, "marbles" was offered as the answer to "mother can get confused"......what does anyone else reckon?
Yerr, I was trying to make marbles and macrame fit, but failed miserably.
I forgot - I did ponder on Curling for "twisting progress". But it seems tenuous to say the least.
Okay, longshots here, but, Ma can - confused: Marmite (7); dressing - could it be something to do with "signs"? You WILL let us know the answers, won't you?!

Lawks Mate! Marmite is definitely a longshot.....unless it's possible that Marmite is a little-known sport or pastime, that I've never come across? I thought the "dressing" one could be Badinage....as in an extra "i" in "bandage"??? The results aren't published until Jan 2004, as it's a Christmas Quiz for a local hospice. I will do my best to remember. Thanks to all helpers......
Yes, I had your bandage dilemma with p(i)laster. Unless anyone passes their time doing interesting things with crowning pieces of vertical columns that's out. January? Oh man, this is doing me cake in already!
January 2004, that is cruel. Do contestants have to be still alive to claim a prize? Eating ismy favourite pastime. I bought a surgical dressing strip, is stripping a sport/pastime?
Question Author
The answer to Mother can get confused IS Marbles!.....so you see what I mean about the compilation of this! I wrote to the compiler and asked if he could put me out of my misery......but that was the only one that he would confirm.
on your own .... could this possibly be 'Jacks'? I know its a bit old fashioned and I don't think its played much anymore, but Jack Jones is slang for on your own. Just a thought :)
Try "dressage". point is usually to do with compass - search in hyperdictionary.com. What about "twirling" for the twisting progress. Don't forget to let us know!
