Many moons ago in the Royal Navy we were taught Rub Your Balls With Grease as an aid to remembering the above sequence of colours. After 30 years the saying is constantly spinning in my head but I have no idea what that sequence of colours represented. Any old tars out there who can help ?

Click http://home.usaa.net/~crowmax/unrep.htm and scroll down to the paragraph that opens: "A shot line..." There, you will find what the US Navy means by that mnemonic and colour-code, so I'd guess it's just the same for the RN.

Quizmonster you are truly remarkable.
It all comes back now. A distance line between ships, used during a RAS (replenishment at sea).
Cheers, T...I'm just glad that the two navies did, indeed, share the code!
