what does point spread betting as mentioned in many wise guy type movies actually mean?

Spread betting is gambling mixed in with the stock market....instead of just predicting a winner you are trying to guess by how much a team (usually team sports) will win by......this link will explain it better than I can

Should have added in that this is also a very dangerous form of gambling as your losses aren't fixed (as you winnings aren't either) rather than betting say �5 on Man U to beat Spurs you will bet that there will be more than say 2 goals in the game if the score is 3-3 then your quids in as you are 4 goals up and you will wil �20 but if it's a 0-0 then you lose �10!
