The Clink is a name given to a prison on Bankside, near London Bridge: I assume that it gave its name to the slang term.

Other terms are: chokey, jug and hoosegow (that's more American); doing porridge and doing bird. I'm sure there are many more.
yes, The Clink is the original; you can visit it. It probably got named after the sound of the jailer's keys or the doors shutting.
I was googling for "big house", which I only know from The Street's Jim McDonald, but came upon a much larger list here.
The Clink was the popular name for the prison attached to Winchester House, a palace that was the home of the Bishops of Winchester from the 12th century until 1626. The Clink Prison Museum reveals the gruesome nature of what life was like for those serving their sentence there. Many of whom were women, that worked in the brothels that were licensed by the Bishops. The Clink is said to owe its name to the 'clinch' irons that were used to pin prisoners to the wall or floor.

I used to walk past it every day on the way to work - it's a scary looking place!

Army prison is known as the glasshouse.
I went in once when my friend and I were wandering around town! It is ok but not brilliant. Very dark and gloomy inside. Probably better if you are between 8 - 13 sort of age range. oh and small!
