I suspect it started life as a saying by the radio/TV football commentator, David Coleman.
It's not actually as daft as it sounds - witness England's performances in the World Cup thus far - they seem to play well in the first half, and after the interval, they go off the boil, hence the phrase " ... a game of two halves ..." does make sense when analysing their apparent decline in form after one of Sven's 'pop talks' - what on earth does he say to them?????

Yes, Noodles, old David was a classic, though I'm far from certain he was the one who produced the 'two halves' beauty. I may not have the exact words here, but he did say: "Juantorena has opened his legs and shown the world what he's got." Wonderful!
