Does anyone know of the saying/phrase that is associated to a pupil amounting so much knowledge/ability that they become better than their teacher?

When the police driving schools were better than they are now, a pupil would often progress to be better than the instructor in terms of reaction times, road observation and quickness of mind. Now they seem to come out just ahead of a yob on his bike.
