My understanding in British JMI schools is it stands for Junior Mixed Infants. Now as these schools (which I went to myself before the initialling) are mixed for both departments (as otherwise half the pupils would have to leave half way through) why put the M in the middle rather than MJI, which makes sense. What's the reason for this oddity?

I was told at school it stood for Junior, Mixed AND Infants.

I have just been informed by a reliable source my original theory was correct. 100 years or so ago junior schools were frequently segregated after moving up from mixed infants, so to indicate the new (as they were then) mixed junior schools they called them JMI so people knew the juniors stayed mixed after 7.


Junior, mixed and infants? Mixed what?!
