I remember when we were young, (albeit a long time ago) my mum used to have a saying about manners at the dinner table but I can't remember how it went apart from:- manners ------- there are pigs at the table, or something like that

The one I remember is if someone belched:

I beg your pardon
Mrs Arden
There's a pig
In your back garden.
The only one I can remember about manners goes like this : "Manners, Pianners (Pianos) tables and chairs, all belong to the lady upstairs !!" Don't ask about the moral behind this because I don't know !

On the subject of belching, ours was

Pardon me for being so rude
It was not me it was food
It just popped up to say hello
and now it's popped back down below

A MERRY CHRISTMAS WHEN IT COMES, 5 WEEKS TO GO.
Table manners were very big when I was growing up.

No elbows on the table.
No crumbling your bread into your soup.
Always tilt the soup bowl away from you, not towards you.
Always take the sandwich/cake nearest to you.
Never get down from the table without asking permission.
"Excuse my pig, she's a friend."
