I used to be able to buy a really vinegary and sharp gherkin/cornichon from Sainsbury. They changed their formula a few years ago and ever since I have been on the hunt.

Can anyone recommend a crunchy and tangy offering?

I struggle to think of any food more revolting than any form of gherkins, so I'm certainly no expert here. However Waitrose might be worth a try:

Alternatively, try an East European food shop, as such foods seem to be popular in that part of the world.

Thanks Chris for overcoming your abhorrence :-) I've exhausted the full gamut of the Waitrose offering, one is middling the rest are less than mediocre.

I did get a catering jar once that were spot on but I cannot remember for the life of me where a I got them from.......although a catering sized jar is a tad OTT for one.
I've seen Hengstenberg products (which are actually German) in East European food shops (and in some delicatessens). Check out the links in the left-hand panel to view the full range:

I love gherkins. Every Xmas my mother used to buy a large jar of mixed pickles to accompany the inevitable plethora of cold turkey we would eat for the next 7 days. I was always being told off for opening the jar and extracting all the gherkins for my own consumption.
Eccles, you could try the ones from Aldi or Lidl, I've always found their pickle ranges good

Thanks Chris, a I think I've had that brand and they are quite sweet rather than having a vinegar hit.

Worth checking out the Polish delis though.

Grasscarp do you know if they are crunchy and vinegary?

So many are a little wooly in texture and sweet in taste.

Blackadder, I have a life long love of pickles.....it may explain why I have always slept with the bedroom window open ;-)
I didn't know how much I like gherkins until I bought a big jar from Morrison's. I ate them like sweets :-)
