Click on here, and scroll down, it doesn't give the meaning you've heard but it is an "urban myth" that the series had hidden meanings.

Only if you are very broad-minded, click here for the various vulgar explanations of the word, one of them at least being vastly older than the 'Captain Pugwash' TV programme.

Thank you for your enlightening link, QM. I am now older and wiser!
I have fond childhood memories of Captain Pugwash and always thought it was a clever reference to the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, an international organization that brings together scholars and public figures to work towards reducing the danger of armed conflict and to seek solutions to global security threats.
can i just say eww!!
jings, crivvens, help-ma-boab!
Gawd somebody really worked that past the T.V.censors of the day didn't they?
and past the ED!!!!
I don't think it was an 'urban myth' that there were hidden meanings in the series. Remember Roger the dog ?!   I think there were other characters of similar ilk.
Master Bates was a character, it can't have been coincidence
3Sytler there was no Master Bates it's a M Y T H ! He was Master Mate.

3Styler apologies for getting yir name wrong.

what about seaman stanes?did everybody forget him? sounds dubious to me.

I think we've proved the case that there was a hidden agenda in the series.  But just for a bit of fun lets have a vote; all in favour of the proposition that 'The series, Captain Pugwash was full of hidden meanings' please signify Aye or Nay.  I'm an Aye.

Great fun.  Derek

Gaaahhh! Here we go again. OK, repeat after me - there was no Master Bates, there was no Seaman Staines, there was no Roger The Cabin Boy (he was actually called Tom). As the lisping boy said when he wanted to get his teacher's attention...Myth! Myth! Myth! Got it? Good.

Incidentally, the University of Portsmouth's student magazine is called Pugwash. I hope it's named after the Captain.
